Ascension Lutheran Church held its first service of worship on Christmas Eve in 1964. It came into being through the vision and work of the Division of Canadian Missions of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada. Pastor Alf Granberg served as interim Pastor for one half  year. The congregation was officially organized in October of 1965 with Pastor Gordon Hanson as its first Pastor.

Ascension grew rapidly under the direction of Pastor Hanson and the dedicated service of a large number of interesting personalities  noted for their  multiple talents and leadership abilities. The growth continued well into the eighties under the leadership of Pastor Steven Nelson who succeeded Pastor Hanson.

Ascension continues its ministry and mission in Calgary with a newly established vision for ministry. It has recently completed an addition to its facility and renovated its parish hall. Its current members and associates come from all parts of the city. The multiple services of worship and the varied  opportunities for service are provided to enable Christians to root themselves in the faith in the midst of the enormous demands on their lives in this post-modern world.
